Nothing can describe the feeling we get the split second before our students take the stage at competition. You know you have given them the training they need to be their best selves out there, but this is now THEIR time. What they choose to do with all that training now rests solely on their shoulders. That's a lot of responsibility for 32 young ladies aged 5 - 17. We have reached the "point of no return" though - It's Competition Season, ya'll.
This past weekend, VDP: TC attended their first competition as a team in Des Moines, Iowa. We knew we were headed into ballet country and were up against some incredible, elite studios we respect immensely. We made it abundantly clear to our dancers these pieces now belonged to them. We reminded them that THIS is what we have been training for. They have three minutes to show off all their hard work over the past seven months. No matter what the outcome, we LEARN and we GROW.
Creating a brand new competitive program that incorporates students from two states, four cities, and five different dance studios is no easy task. Training them to become a precision, elite team in seven months has had ups, downs, sideways, diagonals, and an inappropriate amount of rhinestones. At the end of the day though, we still have to compete and always put our best foot forward.
As we got ready to send our first groups out on stage, we gave them one last pep talk. All of them ended the same way: "Trust Your Training. Watch and listen for each other. You Are Ready." We noticed something early on in the day - These kids were focused. They had their game faces on. There was something different in their eyes. We quickly realized our kids didn't just come to HANG at competition. They were were there to win.
Something came alive in our students this weekend. They were on FIRE. We sat together in the audience with our jaws open several times wondering where these performers all came from. They weren't just dancing. They were emoting. They were enjoying their process and their art. While this weekend went exceptionally well for us in the awards department, our biggest reward was watching these dancers become a TRIBE. They were confident, poised, and professional. They were VDP: TC.
We cannot thank Mr. Craig Scribner and the entire team at Revolution Talent Competition enough for welcoming us with open arms and running a top notch competition. Also, our fellow studios and all their dancers in attendance for giving us an AMAZING weekend of top notch competition. Last, but certainly not least, we'd like to thank our dance parents for going above and beyond to make this weekend happen. The costumes are stunning. The props are incredible. Those sheets are crisp and hung just right!!! None of this is possible without you all. From the bottom of our hearts: THANK YOU. Teamwork makes the dream work.
Now, onto the fun stuff! It only seems appropriate to post awards for our very first competition as a team! These kids were on fire this weekend! We are beyond proud of every single one of our dancers. We can't wait to see how this season unfolds for them all!
